The Count discovers that his wife has been unfaithful to him, and is pregnant with an illegitimate child. Enraged, he throws the Countess down the stairs, breaking her neck and causing the child to be stillborn. The Count has the body of the Countess cremated, and names the stillborn fetus Abigail.
